  3. PGP is short for "Pretty Good Privacy". It's a system for sending
  4. and receiving encrypted messages, and for "signing" messages so that
  5. no one can tamper with them without being detected.

  8. can't be read as easily as a postcard can be. (Electronic mail
  9. is very easy to intercept or tamper with.) Or if you want to be
  10. able to certify that a message really comes from you, and to
  11. make sure no one modifies it. (For instance, some people use PGP
  12. when distributing software, so that virus-infected versions
  13. can't be mistaken for the real thing.)
